Concise writing with AI
Concision in an AI writer is a control you can see, not a promise in the marketing
Seven tools compared only on what makes text shorter and clearer: a shorten action, a length setting, a readability grade and a tone control, and which plan unlocks each. Prices were read on each vendor’s own page on 19 October 2026.
The short answer for shorter writing
- To shorten text you already wrote, use a rewriter.
Wordtune can "lengthen or shorten sentences" and gives 10 rewrites a day free; its Advanced plan is $4.89 a month billed annually. - To see concision as a number, use a readability editor.
Hemingway Editor’s free online checker "instantly shows the grade level of your writing"; the desktop Hemingway Editor 3 is $19.99. - To shorten inside a paid team tool,
Jasper lets you highlight text and "adjust the length" on Pro at $59 a month billed yearly, and
Grammarly Pro rewrites full sentences with a click for $12. - Generators do not guarantee length. Chat-based tools such as
Copy.ai take a word target in the prompt, so check the count before you publish.
| Tool | Concision control | Free plan | Cheapest paid | Best for |

Which AI writing tool is built for shorter writing?
A rewriter with a named shorten action is built for shorter writing, because it starts from your text and only removes words; Wordtune and QuillBot are the two tools here that name the action.
Concision in an AI writer is a control, not a promise: the useful tools expose a shorten action, a length setting or a readability grade you can see change. Wordtune’s own description says it can "lengthen or shorten sentences" and switch between formal and casual tones. QuillBot’s help center lists a Shorten mode that "Reduces word count while keeping the meaning", marked Premium.
This page answers one narrow question. For a broader ranking of AI writers on voice, long-form drafting and price, see our best AI writing tools guide.

What length and brevity controls exist, and on which plan?
Four controls matter: a shorten action, a length setting, a readability grade and a tone control, and most of them sit on paid plans.
Readability grade is a measurable proxy for concise prose, which is why an editor that scores sentences is a different purchase from a chat-based writer. Hemingway’s checker "highlights sentences that are hard to read", and its own page notes that the average reading level for adults in the United States is "only an 8th-grade level".
The federal plain language guidance on digital.gov sets the same goal for public writing, and Nielsen Norman Group’s research on web reading found that 79 percent of test users scanned new pages and only 16 percent read word by word. Short sentences are what a scanning reader actually takes in.
Rewriter or generator: which helps concision more?
A rewriter helps concision more when you already have a draft, because it tightens your words without inventing new ones; a generator helps only when you have no draft and can state a length.
Rewriters and generators solve opposite problems: a rewriter tightens text you already wrote, while a generator has to be told a length and can overshoot it. Jasper sits between the two: its editor lets you highlight text and "adjust the length" with one click, inside a tool built for drafting.
Copy.ai and Writer are generator platforms. Copy.ai’s Chat plan gives "Unlimited Words in Chat", and length comes from the instruction you write. Writer’s Starter plan includes "1 team Personality profile", which sets voice rather than length.
WordtuneAdvanced $4.89, Unlimited $6.99 a month billed annually
Best true angle: the cheapest named shorten control on this page, working on sentences you wrote, with tone switching between formal and casual.
Free use is 10 rewrites and AI suggestions a day; Advanced raises it to 30, Unlimited removes the cap. A 3-day free trial is offered.
Hemingway EditorEditor 3 desktop $19.99; Plus 2-week trial
Best true angle: concision you can measure: the free checker grades readability and highlights hard sentences, so you cut until the grade drops.
Hemingway Editor Plus, which fixes highlighted issues and adjusts tone, shows a free 2-week trial; its price is not printed on the homepage.
GrammarlyPro $12 USD as printed
Best true angle: concise edits in the places you already write, with revisions that its features page says "help you avoid unnecessary back-and-forth".
The plans page we read shows $12 USD for Pro without naming the billing period; confirm monthly or annual at checkout.
JasperPro $59 billed yearly, $69 monthly
Best true angle: marketing teams that need short, on-brand copy: highlight text and adjust the length or tone in one click.
Business is custom priced with a 12-month commitment; the 7-day free trial is on Pro.
Brand voice and tone controls for teams
Teams that need short copy in one voice should look at Jasper or Writer, which store brand voice or personality profiles, rather than at single-user rewriters.
Jasper’s Pro plan includes "2 Brand Voices, 5 Knowledge assets and 3 Audiences". Writer’s Enterprise plan adds "Departmental brand and voice profiles", while its Starter plan covers up to five users. Grammarly Pro lets each writer adjust tone, but it is per person rather than a shared voice.
A shared voice does not make text shorter by itself. Pair it with a length rule in the prompt, or run the draft through a rewriter, and check facts after any AI edit; our note on AI detector false positives covers what happens when edited copy is screened.
What do the free plans allow, and what does each seat cost?
Free plans allow a taste: Wordtune gives 10 rewrites a day, Grammarly 100 AI prompts a month, and Hemingway’s online checker is free to use; paid seats run from $4.89 to $59 a month on annual billing.
Which tool for which writer?
Pick by whether you have a draft, whether you need a number to aim at, and whether a team shares one voice.
- You edit your own draftsWordtunebecause its shorten action works on your sentences, it is free for 10 rewrites a day, and Advanced is $4.89 a month billed annually.
- You want a target to hitHemingway Editorbecause the free checker shows a grade level you can push down, and the desktop app is a one-time $19.99.
- Students with word limitsQuillBot Premiumbecause its Shorten mode reduces word count while keeping the meaning; check the regional price before paying.
- You already write in GrammarlyGrammarly Probecause full-sentence rewrites and tone adjustment appear where you already type, at $12 as printed.
- Marketing team, one brand voiceJasper Probecause one-click length and tone changes sit next to stored Brand Voices, at $59 a month billed yearly.
- You draft from scratch in chatCopy.ai Chatbecause a word target in the prompt is the control, at $24 a month billed yearly; check the count before publishing.
If concision is the goal, buy a control you can see: Wordtune for shortening your own sentences, Hemingway for a readability grade, and Jasper only when a team also needs a shared brand voice.
The check and the prompt to keep
Use the six questions to choose a tool, and the prompt at the end with any chat-based writer when you need a hard length.
